Students hold baby shower for Virgin Mary, regift to children in need

BANGOR - Students in Bangor held a baby shower Wednesday to celebrate a woman who gave birth this month -- and as a way of giving back to the community.

In the New Testament of the Bible, Matthew 1:23 states: "Behold the virgin shall be with child and shall bear a son."

"The message we would send is that all saints is giving community to everyone that needs it. And that we have the heart," Antionette Logan, an eighth grader at All Saints Catholic School, said during Wednesday's celebration.

Like at any baby shower, there were presents and the gifts the children presented to Mary will be regifted to less fortunate children in Greater Bangor.

Students laid diapers, batteries, baby wipes and baby clothes in a mound at the foot of a statue of Mary.

"We're really excited about the special season we're entering," Principal Matthew Houghton said.

For Catholics, this Saturday is a holy day marking the Immaculate Conception and the gifts gathered by the students will brighten Christmas for the pregnant women living at the Shepherd's Godparent Home in Bangor.

"Today says to me how incredibly loving and incredibly charitable this season can be. And how much this season opens people, opens people's hearts," eighth grader Natalie Logan said.
