MECHANIC FALLS (WGME) – The fire at a mill complex in Mechanic Falls was one of the largest in its area in some time but luckily there have been no reported injuries.
A significant reason for that was the quick actions of first responders and good Samaritans.
The fire engulfed the mill complex extremely quickly but since it is right on the main road people began calling in and reporting to firefighters as smoke began to rise high into the sky
Even before firefighters got to the scene, two civilians got out of their cars and jumped into action.
Knowing there were some apartments on the back side, they both said they began knocking on doors — even breaking a few down to alert the people inside of the fire.
Both men said they didn’t think twice about it. They just did what they hope someone else would do for them in a situation like this.
“It was just one of those natural things. When you practice for it just comes natural to you, you just don’t ever think about it,” said Dennis Lucas, who alerted people about the fire. “Your first response is just to make sure no one is in there.”
Rob Vivenzio rescued a man from the fire.
“It sounds like a big deal but it really wasn’t,” he said. “It was no biggie. Honestly, I couldn’t turn my back on it. The old thing of flight or fight — I wanted to fight.”
Both men said they had some minor smoke inhalation and a few cuts and were just happy to get everyone out alive.
