NEWPORT - A four hour long standoff at a motel in Newport ended peacefully Thursday.

Officials with the Newport Police Department said they were called to Pray's Motel on Main Street after a man threatened a cleaning lady and owner with a knife.

When police responded Thursday morning, Louis Irish, 60, refused to leave his room and police said they could see through the window that Irish had pulled out a sword.

A negotiator tried for hours to get Irish to come out, but was unsuccessful. Authorities used a search and arrest warrant, and knocked the door down shortly after 2 p.m.

"We were very happy that it turned out okay and no one was hurt," said Newport Police Chief Leonard Macdaid. "Everyone went home safe."

Chief Macdaid said Irish was highly intoxicated.

He was taken to the hospital to be evaluated, and according to Newport police, arrested for criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon and for criminal trespass.

Officials said they expect him to be arraigned on Friday.
