DIXMONT - Officials confirmed that a woman was shot after an altercation at a Dixmont home on Tuesday evening.

The Penobscot County Sheriff's Office released new details about the incident on Wednesday.

Authorities received a call around 4:15 p.m. Tuesday about shots fired at a home on Moosehead Trail Highway.

According to the Penobscot County Sheriff's Office, a fight inside the home escalated to involve a fire arm. When two males struggled to get the firearm, the weapon was discharged and a woman inside the home was shot. She was taken to Sebasticook Valley Hospital with non-life threatening injuries and later released.

Officials said the suspect left the scene and was found at a residence further up the road.

The Waldo County Sheriff's Office and Maine State Police assisted with the response.

The incident is still under investigation and will be reviewed by the Penobscot County District Attorney's Office.
