Unity College enrollment continues to climb

UNITY - A private college in Maine is bucking the small private enrollment trend across the country by nearly doubling enrollment in the last six years.

Unity College, America's environmental college, has seen steady growth since 2012 when there were 540 students.

This fall, 773 students are taking classes in Unity under 17 different majors.

"All of Maine is part of our curriculum," President Melik Peter Khoury said. "Our biologist take people down to the bog. Our marine biologists are out in the ocean so it's really more than just kind of sitting in the classroom for four years and the like.

"Our brand of education, I like to say 'Made in Maine,' is really relevant to folks who want to be part of the environmental economy," he said.

The school also is kicking off new undergraduate online classes starting in October that will feature classes that focus on environmental criminal justice, sustainable business management, wildlife conservation and environmental studies.
