Waldo County Sheriff's Office warn people about 'empowerment program' scam Featured

WALDO COUNTY - The Waldo County Sheriff's Office is warning people about a recent scam.

A 75-year-old woman recently lost $15,000 after she was contacted through Facebook to take part in an "empowerment program" opportunity.

The scammer messaged her through a friend's Facebook account and then communicated with her through text message, asking her to wire money in order to receive a larger amount later.

Sheriff Jeff Trafton says there is no way to trace the call and it is unlikely that she'll get her money back.

If you are contacted to take part in an "empowerment program" opportunity, you are asked to report it to the Waldo County Sheriff's Office at 207-338-6786.
