Bangor police charged 22-year-old Bret Libby with assault on a police officer, obstructing government administration and disorderly conduct.
According to Bangor police spokesman Sgt. Wade Betters, Libby interfered while Officer George Spencer was trying to help another officer arrest a juvenile on an unrelated charge. Several people surrounded Spencer and the other officer and some of the onlookers hurled insults at the police officers.
One woman was warned to back away from the police but she refused. And, Betters said, when Spencer tried to arrest 23-year-old Mariah Lamb, Libby allegedly stepped in and started punching Spencer in the head and face.
As a result of the episode, the Bangor Police Department will be increasing its presence in Pickering Square and the surrounding area to help keep things calm and reduce violence.
"There's not a lot of violence down here. We really don't have a lot of problems down here but it's when they do happen, we need to have more officer down here to respond quickly," Betters said.
Lamb and Libby were arrested and taken to Penobscot County Jail. Lamb faces disorderly conduct and refusing to submit to arrest charges.
