Groundbreaking for new middle school Featured

CAMDEN - Students in the Camden Rockport area will be getting a new middle school.

There was a ceremonial groundbreaking earlier Thursday.

The idea of a completely new building for the Camden Rockport middle school and not just a renovation has been in the works since 2015.

Superintendent of schools Maria Libby said, "People wanted a new building because it made the most financial sense."

She said after a failed vote because of the lack of communication, they went back to work and had another vote in 2017, "It's completely locally funded project so it really required support of our community, and we're very appreciative that the vote passed by quite a margin."

She said the new building will have more of a modern feel, "We'll have a makers space connected to our library, we'll have some alternative learning spaces for students to do some informal creative learning."

They've also taken into consideration the safety of the new building. Right now the bus and parent drop off is right off of a main street, but soon they will have a separate location for that.

She said placing the new school one hundred feet back will make a big difference, "We're able to design it so that the structure matched our needs, our functional needs, and this building really does not."

Libby said the school will be a legacy for generations to come, "Really happy that we're going to have three superb facilities for our students to attend school."
