Knox barn collapse leaves 1 dead, 3 injured Featured

KNOX - One person is dead and three others are injured after a barn collapse this morning in the town of Knox. The structure collapse occurred off of Belfast Road in Knox just before 9:25 this morning.

According to the Waldo County Sheriff's Office, contractors from Suydam & Sons of Northport were in the process of tearing down an old barn when the roof collapsed on one of the workers.

 

William Viles of Belfast was pinned beneath the debris, and despite the efforts of the other workers and first responders, died on the scene.

 

A second person was transported to Waldo County General Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

 

There were multiple first responders there to help.

 

"You had fire departments from Thorndike, Freedom, Knox, Unity," said Waldo County Sheriff Jeff Trafton. "They had really, really good response from the volunteer fire departments today."

 

Lifeflight was initially called to the accident, but was canceled before it could arrive.

 

Osha representatives from augusta were notified and are conducting an investigation to find out more about the cause of the collapse.
