ORONO – The Orono bog walk has been a big hit this year with more than 30,000 people coming to visit it.
The bog walk is currently raising funds to replace the remaining sections.
Jim Bird who is the director of the bog walk said they are going to close October 13th instead of late November to work on it, “Then October 14th we start pulling out sections, 65 sections putting in 65 new ones and then that will only leave 48 more to go.”
Bird said it’ll only take about 2 to 3 weeks to finish the first sections. Then they still need to raise the funds for the next stage, “We’ve got a number of grants out and proposals out, and individual donors. We collect money here at the boardwalk people donate when they walk through so yeah we’ll do it hopefully we do it by the end of the year, but it may take until next year.”
The bog was a big hit this this year. Bird said around 30,000 people came to visit, “They just like to get away from you know we’re a mile in a half from the Bangor mall and so it’s just really nice out there.”
Tourist have also been visiting the bog walk.
“I think we’re up to 37 states. We have a sign in sheet, they don’t have to, but a lot of them do. I think 37 states and 7 foreign countries,” said Bird.
