Families First Community Center recently purchased a house with plans to add on to the existing building.
When construction is finished the property will be transformed into a six-unit shelter with an adjoining daycare center.
Homeless people are far more visible in urban areas but the president of families first said it also is an issue in rural Maine.
"I think it is. I think it's a lot closer than we know because we don't see people on the street as much. Occasionally, out by Walmart. But there is a lot of homelessness and there's a lot of people who live in tents out in the woods. And we don't see that," President Terri Ouellette said.
Construction is expected to be completed by spring of 2019.
