The fire broke out shortly before noon at a house on Squirrel Lane.
Eddington Fire Chief James Ellis said they the man who lives there alone was gone for the day when the fire broke out.
No firefighters were injured.
The fire went right through the roof, and firefighters said the home is a total loss.
Black smoke could be seen from I-395. Part of nearby Route 9 had to be shut down Sunday afternoon as firefighters responded to the scene.
About a half a dozen neighboring departments responded, and Chief Ellis said the biggest problem fighting this fire was manpower.
"You hear stories all the time of small fire departments struggling with man power, it's real," said Chief Ellis. "And particularly on a beautiful fall day, people are away and we are no exception."
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
