Maine lobstermen in middle of US, China trade war

STATEWIDE - Maine lobstermen are finding themselves in the middle of a trade war between the United States and China.

China recently increased tariffs on live seafood from America.

That move is seen as a response to President Donald Trump increasing tariffs on Chinese exports coming into the United States.

Maine's 2nd District congressman recently met with members of the Trump administration to discuss the impact of the tariffs on Maine's lobster industry.

"This is a delicacy that's enjoyed not only in Maine but around the world," Rep. Bruce Poliquin, R-Maine, said.

"But we need to make sure we can sell our lobsters at a competitive price and these tariffs are not something that's helpful," he said.

Poliquin says he believes the president is trying to level the economic playing field.

However, he also said he wants to make sure Mainers don't suffer because of it.
