BANGOR - Two people involved in a plot to illegally smuggle a Mexican national into the United States appeared in U.S. District Court in Bangor on Tuesday.

The U.S. Attorney's Office said Sarah Louise Branch of Australia was arrested last summer while trying to help her boyfriend sneak into the U.S. at the Calais border checkpoint.

Officials say she knew Benigno Godinez-Cortez would not be admitted into the country and planned to pick him up after he entered illegally.

Branch pleaded guilty to encouraging and inducing the entry of an illegal alien into the U.S.

Godinez-Cortez pleaded guilty to unlawfully re-entering the U.S.

Both are awaiting their sentences.
