Brewer High student gearing up for last Ride for the Wet Nose Featured

Written by

BREWER - For the past several years, a Brewer High School student has been raising money for local animal welfare charities.

Every August since he was 9 years old, Matt Gross has honored the memory of his dog by pedaling hundreds of miles and collecting thousands of dollars. That beagle was abused as a puppy. The Gross family adopted Buddy from the Bangor Humane Society.

"I just didn't want any animals to go through what he had to go through so I started a fund raiser," Gross said.

"I called it Ride for the Wet Nose. I came out with just a little slip of paper that said raise $300 for the Bangor Humane Society. That's how it started and we raised $1,000 the first year," he said.

However, this year will be his last year raising money because he says as he gets closer to high school graduation he needs to devote his time to making sure he is ready for college.

This year's 65-mile ride is scheduled for Wednesday. And if he's able to raise $300 more in pledges, he will have raised a total of $16,000 over seven years. To help, visit the event's Facebook page.
