Man shoots himself at Gardiner traffic stop, body found in his car Featured

GARDINER - Maine State Police are investigating a traffic stop that led to a driver shooting and killing himself in front of an officer. Police found a body in the trunk of the car shortly thereafter.

 

Officials said around 4:45 p.m. on Thursday, Maine State Police stopped a car on Timberwood Drive in Gardiner, after receiving reports it was driving erratically on I-295.

 

Steve McCausland, a spokesperson for the Maine State Police, said the driver immediately got out of the car and shot and killed himself. After the man shot himself, authorities found a body in the car's trunk.

 

Both bodies have been taken to the State Medical Examiner's Office in Augusta for autopsies and examination.

Authorities have not yet released the names of the people involved in the incident.

 

State police said there is no ongoing threat to the public.
