While the work is not scheduled to be completed until October, this week saw construction workers cutting a doorway in the Chamberlain bridge abutment. After crews remove the dirt from under the bridge, the riverwalk extension will connect to the existing riverwalk.
"There's obviously a lot more work to be done in that area. But it's exciting for all of us. We've been excited for years since we started designing it. So this is a real tangible, visible milestone," Brewer Economic Development Director D'Arcy Main-Boyington said.
The initial quarter-mile of Brewer's riverwalk so far has attracted two restaurants, including a microbrewery.
The extension will double the riverwalk's distance as it pushes farther north along the Penobscot River.
