CALAIS – Two countries are kicking off a celebration with roots that go back 44 years.
The International Homecoming Festival kicks off Wednesday night with a handshake and exchange of flags on the ferry Ferry Point Bridge between Calais and St. Stephen, New Brunswick.
“You do have the international border in between but you know, there’s a lot of friendship going back and forth,” Roxanne Redding, one of the event’s organizers, said.
During the festival the two countries become one, hosting many events on both sides of the border.
Those activities include a parade and lots of kid-friendly activities.
The festival concludes with a fireworks display at dusk on Sunday.
ABC 7/Fox 22 Bangor will be broadcasting live from the opening ceremony Wednesday evening.
