96-year-old Carmel woman awarded for being town's oldest resident

CARMEL - Sometimes being the oldest person in town has its perks. At least, that's what Althea Nute of Carmel found out Monday.

The 96-year-old Carmel resident was surprised with the Boston Post Cane Award Monday evening for being the town's oldest resident.

She was given flowers, a plaque and a specially designed ebony-shafted, gold-capped cane that will be on display at the Carmel town office.

Nute says she was pleasantly surprised by the award - but she knew something was up.

"Cause my daughter was up for how long, hadn't been up for a long time," said Nute. "Yes, I was astounded."

The award was originally started as a publicity stunt by the Boston Post Daily Newspaper in the 1900s.

The newspaper has since shut down, but the tradition continues in many towns with near seven hundred of the canes still in existence
