Helicopter used to rescue hiker on Mt. Katahdin trail

MT. KATAHDIN - A woman hiking Katahdin was hospitalized Monday morning after being rescued from a trail via helicopter.

The rescue happened early Monday morning on the Abol Trail.

A 47-year-old woman called 911 late Sunday night, reporting a debilitating knee injury and severe exhaustion.

Two Baxter State Park rangers responded to the call around 2:30 Monday morning.

A Maine Forest Service helicopter helped remove the woman from the difficult trail.

The aircraft transported her to a safer location so she could be taken to the Millinocket Regional Hospital by firefighters.

Authorities say the contribution of the forest service along with efforts from park rangers and the Millinocket Fire Department were critical to the successful rescue.
