MDI YMCA fishing camp teaches kids

Written by

BAR HARBOR - A group of kids on Mount Desert Island is getting hooked on one summer activity this week.

Thirteen boys and girls are participating in a week-long fishing camp put on by the MDI YMCA.

A lot of the children are local, but a few have traveled from as far away as Florida for the camp.

The group ventures out to different lakes and regions all over the island to learn the basics of fishing.

"We went on the canoes on Long Pond and did some bass fishing, some pickerel," said Jared Erskine, of the Mount Desert Island YMCA. "They get to learn to paddle the boats and get to learn to cast a line as well."

On Wednesday, the group went out on the sea in a refurbished lobster boat -- the Lu Lu -- to learn about lobsters and harbor seals.

The camp runs until friday.
