Red Cross puts out call for blood donors

BANGOR - The American Red Cross has an urgent need for blood donations.

The organization says it is facing an emergency blood shortage following the busy Fourth of July week. Blood currently is being distributed to hospitals faster than donations are coming in.

Much of that is because people have been busy on vacations or were among the millions who were traveling for the holiday.

"That means there's 46 million people weren't donating, weren't going to a drive or holding a drive. So that has a huge impact and the needs we have, it's constant and it doesn't take a vacation," Sherri Phinney of the Red Cross said.

Phinney says Red Cross currently need donors of all blood types.

Red Cross officials hope people will consider taking part in a blood drive in their area or contact the donor center on Hammond Street in Bangor to make an appointment to give the gift of life.
