Saturday's Bangor Pride Festival kicks off at 10 a.m., when the annual Pride parade wind its way through downtown, to be followed by a festival featuring live music, food, dancing and much more.
The organizers say the purpose of Pride Week is to help eliminate the stigma and discrimination many still face because of their sexual or gender identity.
"And while we've made progress, there are not just issues in our country, but in this area," Bangor Pride organizer Hannah Rhulin said. "Specifically, with members of the queer community facing discrimination and stigma, sometimes that's verbal assault. Sometimes it's threatening and physical assault."
