Augusta police seeking return of marker stolen from officer's grave

AUGUSTA - Augusta police are searching for a special marker that was stolen from a police officer's grave. They hope the public will help get the marker returned to Mount Hope Cemetery in the state's capital.

Local police help maintain the graves of two Augusta officers who were killed in the line of duty. Every summer, brass flag holders like the one seen in this photo are placed at both grave sites.

They have discovered one of the holders is missing from the grave of Rufus Lishness, who was shot in 1984 while trying to arrest a man.

Augusta police hope to hear from anyone who can help them locate the missing flag holder, which reads "Maine Law Enforcement Officer Killed in the Line of Duty."
