As one of the kickoff events, a gathering was held Monday morning at the freshly painted rainbow crosswalk in downtown Bangor.
Pride officials say the week is a time to reflect on how far society has come in terms of respecting people, regardless of sexual orientation.
"We're still moving forward. Progress is being made. There's still a lot that needs to happen but we're seeing so much support in this community," Bangor Pride Co-Chair Ambureen Rana said.
"Last year was the biggest Pride Festival we ever had and we're absolutely going to surpass that this year," she said.
A variety of events are being held to celebrate Pride Week, including a children's book night and an open mic night.
