Primary ballot counting to start Friday Featured

AUGUSTA - Ballots from Tuesday's primary election were expected to be delivered to Augusta by private courier on Thursday.

That is where the counting will take place in the nation's first statewide election using ranked-choice voting.

The counting is expected to get underway Friday and last into next week.

Mainers voted for Shawn Moody as the Republican nominee for governor, but it was a much closer vote for the Democrats.

Attorney General Janet Mills and Adam Cote are separated by a few thousand votes and the counting could have an impact on the outcome of that race.

Maine residents also voted Tuesday to use ranked-choice voting in future elections.
