STETSON - A close call for a father and son in Penobscot County after the car they're driving bursts into flames.

Authorities received a call around 6:40 Wednesday afternoon of a vehicle fire on Lakins Road in Stetson.

After investigating, a member of the Penobscot County Sheriff's Office says it appears a mechanical issue sparked the fire.

"The occupants stopped to check the smell of smoke and when they did flames burst out of the engine compartment and into the passenger compartment and rapidly spread through the car," said Corporal Ryan Fitch of the Penobscot County Sheriff's Office.

When Etna fire crews arrived on scene, authorities say the vehicle was fully engulfed and nearly finished.

Corporal Fitch says the fire was so hot the airbag exploded, shooting out of the car and landing on a nearby power line.

The two men escaped unharmed but their car, burned to the bare metal, is a total loss.
