Charges follow teen brawl in Newport

Written by

NEWPORT - Newport police charged some people in connection with a brawl that happened sometime within the page several days and more charges are expected, according to the Newport Police Department's Facebook page.

Newport Police Chief Leonard McDaid declined further comment, citing the fact those involved are juveniles.

A video of the incident was circulating on social media over the weekend. ABC 7 Fox News viewed the video and because of the graphic nature of the content decided against broadcasting it. The video shows several teens gathered on a railroad track and drinking alcohol. At one point, one of the teens punches another, then slams him into the tracks.

RSU 19 Superintendent Mike Hammer viewed the video before it was taken off line and described it as "very disturbing. Frustrating that this is how we would be perceived. But they're on their own time. And they're making their own choices. And there was alcohol involved."

While it was not clear if the incident was sparked by bullying, Hammer said any student who believes they are being bullied should reach out to any school staff members.
