Maine gets new gender option for driver's licenses, state ID cards

STATEWIDE - Maine's Bureau of Motor Vehicles is offering a new option when it comes to listing ones gender on a drivers license.

Beginning Monday, people can choose a non-binary designation instead of the traditional male or female.

The change was prompted by a complaint filed by the Maine Human Rights Commission on behalf of a southern Maine resident who does not identify as male or female.

People who wish to change their licenses or state IDs immediately can go to the BMV to get a special sticker that reads "gender has been changed to x-non binary."

The option will become a permanent part of Maine's newly designed driver's licenses when they are released next year.
