Caterpillars infest section of Blue Hill road

Written by

BLUE HILL - For some in Blue Hill, this week was like a scene from a real nightmare as thousands of caterpillars converged upon an area along Mines Road.

So many of the insects have gathered there that the Maine Department of Transportation placed a sign on the road warning drivers about the slippery conditions.

Blue Hill resident Margaret Perkins-Tufts shared a video of her home covered by the caterpillars.

The hungry insects have been stripping trees of leaves, which is why some people have been wrapping the trunks with duct tape covered with petroleum jelly to keep them from climbing higher.

State officials said the forest tent caterpillar is responsible but that the bugs should end their frantic feeding by the end of the month.
