For the last five years, Maine has seen an average annual increase in tourism of 5 percent. The state kicks off a new tourism season this coming Memorial Day weekend.
While most visitors are from the New England regions, the state has seen in increase in visitors from the mid-Atlantic states.
"Maine welcomed over 36 million visitors on tourism-related trips in 2017, and while two-thirds of those people did visit during the summer months, winter and fall visitation is growing rapidly in Maine," Jennifer Geiger, communications manager for the Maine Office of Tourism, said.
Some of the most popular activities for tourists in Maine during the summer months are food, shopping, touring and sightseeing. In the winter months, the top draws are outdoor sports, including cross country skiing and snowmobiling.
