MACHIAS - A big heart, drive, and a passion for taking care of people are what led one nurse to win the ultimate prize.

The winner of the certified nursing assistant award goes to, Caitlin Atkinson.

CNA and CRMA at Maine Veterans Home Caitlin Atkinson said, "I was very shocked I didn't really get my hopes up it was a national thing, but I am very blessed to be able to have it."

The CNA program was looking for someone who is planning on going to college or who is already in college pursuing a career in healthcare.

Administrator at the Maine Veterans Home Marcia Jackson said, "I nominated Caitlin the person had to be here for at least a year as an employee."

Jackson knew Caitlin would be the perfect fit.

"She does a lot more than just be a certified nurses aid, but she takes wonderful care of the residence. At times she has to pass medications she mentors new people," said Jackson.

The list goes on and on, but Caitlin said her favorite part about working at the Maine Veterans Home is giving back to the veterans. "It feels good to be able to influence their lives and help give back to them as they given back to our country. I love the interaction with them and getting to here all of their wonderful stories especially the ones who have been in war and stuff."

Jackson said Caitlin is always trying to come up with ways so the elderly can always try something new.

"We have a resident that has sundown syndrome int he evening restless...the activity coordinator told me that Caitlin took it upon herself to bring in her own laptop and get him interested in something that was on the laptop," said Jackson.

It's no wonder why Caitlin was chosen for the award and a $3,000 scholarship.

"I go to Las Vegas to get my scholarship and my award," said Atkinson.
