Teachers could soon be trained in mental health first aid if bill passes

AUGUSTA - Some educators across the state could soon be trained in mental health first aid.

That's if a bill to provide funding for training to at least two teachers per school gets final approval from lawmakers.

The bill received initial approval from both chambers of the legislature earlier this week, and one senator said this is a bill that's long overdue.

Senator Catherine Breen, D-Falmouth, said: "With this bill and others before us, this is one way to take care of the kids we already have in Maine."

The legislature's appropriations committee estimated it will cost about $100,000 for the training.

The proposed law is expected to receive final approval from both houses of the legislature early next week.
