MDOT delaying new ferry ticket rates

Written by

AUGUSTA - The Maine Department of Transportation said it will delay the implementation of new ferry rates in Maine until later this spring.

The department had planned to begin the new rates for residents and nonresidents this month, but there was so much input from the public, the commissioner wants more time to consider the rate proposals before moving ahead.

State law requires the DOT to collect at least 50 percent of the ferry service operating costs from ticket sales.

The projected operating budget of $11 million for 2020 will force the first jump in ticket prices for the first time in almost a decade to cover increasing costs.

The DOT will now try to come up with a final rate structure that incorporates public feedback and the policy goals.
