STATEWIDE - A few hundred students received some very good news as they prepare to head to a University of Maine campus in the fall.

Presidents from the Universities of Maine at Augusta, Fort Kent, Machias, and Presque Isle announced they have produced 300 scholarships that will completely cover tuition costs for the students attending their schools in 2018.

UMA VP of Marketing, Jonathan Henry, said "We did our research and decided we can offer that same promise to pay no tuition if you are Pell Grant eligible, that's the Federal Pell Grant. So, any student who eligible to receive the Federal Pell Grant will be getting an additional grant from the institution to match whatever is needed to make sure they pay zero tuition cost during their undergraduate experience."

The so-called "Promise Program" is being implemented at the four schools with the lowest tuition costs in the system. It's designed to boost enrollment to match successes seen in Orono, Farmington, and Southern Maine.
