ACADIA NATIONAL PARK - U.S. Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke is defending his plan to raise entrance fees at Acadia National Park and16 other popular parks around the nation.

Zinke said one of the biggest problems is too many people get in for free. He stated, "When you give discounted or free passes to elderly, fourth graders, veterans and disabled, and you do it by the carload, there's not a whole lot of people who actually pay at the front door."

Under the plan, the fee would nearly triple the cost of vehicle passed to Acadia during peak months from $25 dollars to $70. Entrance fees for individuals would also be raised from $12 to $30.

Zinke said the money is needed to help fix a backlog of maintenance and infrastructure improvements.

Senators Susan Collins and Angus King are among those pushing back against the proposed increase.
