ORONO – Some tense moments Wednesday afternoon for students aboard a school bus in Orono.
State police say a group of students from Hermon was returning from a visit to the UMaine field house when the engine started smoking.
Next thing they knew, it was on fire.
Police say the driver did exactly the right thing and pulled over to the side of the interstate.
“As it was going on the interstate, the school bus started on fire. The school bus pulled over on the side of the interstate. At that point they realized it was starting to go up in flames and everyone exited at the back and no one was seriously injured,” said Trooper Jeremy Caron with the Maine State Police.
There were about 15 people on the bus when the fire broke out.
Cyr bus sent another bus to pick them up to return them to Hermon.
