Former Bucksport mill site to become land-based salmon farm

BUCKSPORT - Wonderful economic news for the town of Bucksport Thursday.

A Maine-based company called Whole Oceans has announced plans to build a massive aquaculture operation at the site of the former Verso paper mill.

The company says it has purchased the mill site and says it's a $250 million investment that will create hundreds of jobs.

According to a release from the company, it will be a state-of-the-art facility that will be used to raise Atlantic salmon.

This is big news for Bucksport, which lost hundreds jobs and lots of revenue when the paper mill closed.

"There's been a lot of conversations in this community about our hopes for the former mill site, and i think there was a sentiment that light and environmentally responsible industry was the best use for that location," said Brook Minner, executive director of Main Street Bucksport. "So this is just perfect and we're thrilled."

The company says it has already pre-sold 100% of its total production for the next ten years.

It plans to break ground in August of this year..
