Focus of bill would help save elderly from foreclosure

AUGUSTA - A bill backed by Governor Paul LePage would offer assistance for elderly Mainers facing foreclosure for failure to pay property taxes.

The governor spearheaded the bill after an Albion couple were forced from their house when the town foreclosed on their home.

The new owner evicted them, forcing them to move in with their daughter in Holden.

Assistant House Minority Leader Ellie Espling, R - New Gloucester, said "And to simply said, that during the 18-month tax-lien foreclosure process give these elderly citizens a chance to understand what they're going through. And a chance to fix the problem."

If approved by the full legislature, the bill would require someone from the town to reach out to elderly property owners in danger of having the town take their home for failure to pay taxes.
