Brigadier General speaks to Maine Legislature Featured

AUGUSTA - More than 3,000 Mainers are members of the Maine National Guard.

Recruiting and retention of qualified people are among the more difficult tasks facing the guard still the head of the state's Department of Defense told a joint session of the Maine Legislature


Today's soldiers are top notch recruits.


Brigadier General Douglas Farnham stated "Despite these challenges, please don't get the wrong idea about the quality of soldiers we are recruiting. One thing that has changed the most during my time in the military is the education and technical skills of our force. It is quite impressive."


Farnham also told lawmakers since 2001, more than 6,000 Maine soldiers have been deployed overseas, taking part in America's fight against terrorism.
