Hannaford distribution workers authorize a strike

Written by

SOUTH PORTLAND - Hannaford supermarkets has agreed to return to the bargaining table with union workers at its distribution center in South Portland.

Members of United Food and Commercial Workers Local 1445 authorized a strike after contract talks broke down.

They said they have been working for weeks to negotiate a new contract. Their current contract expired at midnight Saturday and workers at the distribution center authorized a strike unless there was a breakthrough.

They released a statement saying, they don't want to strike, but if progress can't be made, they may have to. Ensuring they make a decent living in their communities.

We reached out to Hannaford's, but so far haven't received a response.

However, there's word today both sides have agreed to return to the bargaining table.
