More information given on Ellsworth fire, except for the cause

ELLSWORTH - Maine State Fire Marshals are working to determine the cause of a fire in Ellsworth.

It was around 4:30 p.m. Tuesday when the fire was reported on the Christian Ridge Road.

Drivers on Route 1A could see smoke billowing from the area miles away from the scene. When firefighters got there an attached garage was fully involved in flames.

They also learned the owner was taken to the hospital in a private car to be treated for burns. That man suffered both second and third degree burns although his condition is unknown.

A fire fighter was also hospitalized because of a knee injury.

Officials were able to knock down the garage and save the main house.

Ellsworth Fire Chief Gary Saunders said "Once we got water supply established, we have hydrants on both ends of this road, but it's still about a mile, but once were were able to get sufficient tankers on scene, we were able to shuttle that water in and make an effective attack on that fire."

The building that was destroyed contained three apartments leaving the tenants without a home.

Crews from Ellsworth, Trenton, Hancock and Lamoine responded to the call.
