Jeffrey Willey Jr., 44, of Sangerville was traveling south along the rail-bed snowmobile trail when he struck a tree.
Officials said Willey was traveling in a group of two sleds. When Wiley did not reach the destination with them, the other sled turned around and found the accident scene.
The Maine Warden Service is currently mapping the scene to determine what exactly led to the crash. Wardens had just completed a trail safety check on that trail system last weekend, and had released safety recommendations.
"Speed is the number one problem at times at snowmobile crashes, and alcohol falls in part there as well," said Will Shuman, a district game warden.
The crash involved only one machine, and Willey was the lone operator.
Wardens were assisted by members of Corinna Fire, Dexter Police Department and Mayo Regional Ambulance.
This is the second fatal accident this year.
