So says a state representative from Winthrop. And he said it's time to do something about it
Representative Craig Hickman, D-Winthrop, said "We have a problem with up to 40 percent of the food produced in the state going to waste. And it's a burden on our landfills. Therefore, a burden on our environment. But that food also should be used to feed people because in Maine one in four children go to bed hungry every night."
Representative Hickman's bill would direct state facilities, such as university and community college campuses, to explore ways to funnel excess food to either food pantries for people or farms to feed livestock.
