BELFAST - Belfast will now be the home of the worlds largest land based salmon farm.

The announcement made this morning by Nordic Aquafarms say that there will be multiple advantages of having a land based fish farm

The Norwegian aquaculture company announced a major land based salmon farm in Belfast.

CEO of Nordic Aquafarms Erik Heim said "We are producing salmon in indoor tanks contained environments in a environmental friendly approach."

The facility will provide high quality, super fresh Atlantic salmon to the regional market. It also has many advantages like the ability to recycle and treat water on site---cleaning all discharged water.

Belfast like many cities are always looking for economic developments and this project will do just that.

"The first phase investment of 150 million dollars, and employment high skilled jobs coming in as well" said Heim.

The investment is expected to employ 60 people when completed in the next two years.

"So we hope it's a positive contribution to Belfast" said Heim.

After conducting an international market assessment they chose Maine because of its pristine environment, cold water conditions, and its long history as a leader in the seafood industry.

"To find a good site that will work for us. It's been a long search a lot of things need to come together to make it work" said Heim.

He says he sees a lot of potential expansion in future.
