Now, Washington County legislators are spearheading an effort to keep the jail operating through the end of June 2019.
Currently, there's enough money in the budget to keep the minimum security facility open through the end of June this year.
Representative Will Tuel, R-East Machias, said "What we really need to do is keep this open for now. Keep this open past June of this year. And keep it open for another year. But beyond that if something is going to happen we need to have a plan. We need to have a plan if it stays open. We need to have a plan if it closes."
keeping it open through the end of June 2019 has a price tag of around $5.5 million.
The next step is a public hearing later this month before the legislature's Criminal Justice Committee.
