Coast Guard cutters are breaking ice while the sun shines Featured

BANGOR - The U.S. Coast Guard is continuing to break up ice on the Penobscot.

Cutters from Rockland and Southwest Harbor worked in tandem Thursday to break the ice during high tide so the outgoing current would carry it down river.

Officials said with the slightly warmer weather they're trying to get the cutters up the river as far as possible to reduce the potential for ice jams.

The thick ice called for two cutters, so one wouldn't get stuck. The cutters made it about three miles south of Bangor and will continue Friday.
