A.C.L.U. challenges abortion law from 1979

PORTLAND - In U.S. District Court in Portland Wednesday, the A.C.L.U.  joined two abortion providers challenging a 38-year-old Maine law stating only physicians can perform abortions.

According to a statement from the A.C.L.U. that 1979 law blocks nurse practitioners and nurse mid-wives from performing abortions.

"And that significantly limits access to care. And the data is very clear that this is well within the scope and expertise of a nurse practitioner and a nurse midwife." said Evelyn Kieltyka, MSN, MS, FNP-BC, Maine Family Planning. She said the groups considered the legislative route to change the law, but believed the current governor would have fought against it.
