The maximum sentence was handed out Monday in the double murder trial of Anthony Lord.
Two years after his rampage on July16th and 17th, 2015, Lord, 37, pleaded guilty to the charges - his attorney said - to help give the families closure.
But for the mother of Kyle Hewitt, who was gunned down by Lord, it doesn't stop the pain.
"I'm feeling really raw," Shelly Hewitt said. "I'm glad about the life sentence, it's what we asked for. But it doesn't bring Kyle back."
The defense attorney, David Bate, said Lord was incredibly distraught after losing his child two months before the killings. He told the judge it wasn't premeditated, that he just snapped.
Lord's half-brother Scott Mclaughlin agreed. "His exact words to the nurse was, 'I need mental health help. I need to go to Acadia [hospital] because of the death of my son, and I feel like I'm gonna crack.'"
The judge agreed as well, saying it was not proven to be pre-meditated. But in the end, she told Anthony Lord he would spend the rest of his days in prison with no possibility for parole.
Shelly Hewitt gave some of the most powerful comments during the sentencing, including one moment where she said she understands Lord's pain of losing a child. She then looked over at Lord and said, "But there are better ways to grieve."
