AUGUSTA – It’s been said, opioid addiction does not discriminate.
Today, the director of the Defense Health Agency said service members are suffering as much as the civilian population.
Appearing at the 7th Annual Maine Military and Community Network Conference this morning, Vice Admiral Raquel Bono said last year overdose deaths nationally matched the number of American Soldiers killed in the Vietnam Conflict.
Vice Admiral Bono stated “As a trauma surgeon I take the same view on opioid addiction as I do with trauma and it is a preventable disease.”
Vice Admiral Bono said doctors need to look beyond traditional methods of pain management. She stated even massage therapy and acupuncture should be considered. The conference was held at the Augusta Civic Center, among those attending were veterans, active duty military personnel and people who provide support services for them.
